After crossing the border, your first pit stop awaits at Zelengaj Izletište, a delightful spot for a coffee or snack, recharging your energy for the day’s discoveries. Explore the archaeological park Nekropola in Goričan, where Iron Age burial mounds hold captivating stories. Engage in an archaeologist-led workshop to experience hands-on excavation and delve into the past. Make sure to arrange this immersive adventure in advance. Consider a detour to the majestic Mura-Drava confluence before concluding your day’s adventure. Then, head to a comfortable hotel by Lake Dubrava for a well-deserved and rejuvenating night’s sleep, preparing for the next leg of your remarkable cycling expedition. Day 5 promises a blend of history, adventure, scenic beauty, wildlife encounters, and a touch of nature’s marvels, making it an unforgettable chapter in your cycling journey.

On this leg of your cycling adventure, you’ll ride through a series of authentic Međimurje villages including Čehovec, Palinovec and Križovec, offering a genuine glimpse into local rural life. Highlights of the day include: the Memorial Park of the first oil spring in Peklenica, the former miners’ town of Mursko Središće, the “Med dvemi vodami” Visitor Centre in Križovec, and the historic Mill on the Mura in Žabnik, one of the most atmospheric spots along the river. The day concludes in Sveti Martin na Muri, home to the first Healthness resort in Europe, where relaxation, thermal waters and wellness facilities provide the perfect reward after a pleasant cycling day.

Leaving Sveti Martin na Muri, today’s route follows the Mura downstream, continuing your journey along the Amazon of Europe Bike Trail without backtracking. Shortly after departure, you cross into Slovenia and ride through peaceful countryside, small vineyards, and traditional villages of the Pomurje region. The landscape opens up, with long stretches of riverside paths, floodplain forests, and open views that define this gentle section of the Mura. Highlights along the way include: Mađerka Hill lookout tower (optional short detour), offering panoramic views over Slovenia, Croatia, Austria, and Hungary – a symbolic meeting point of four countries; the tranquil villages of Lapšina and Šafarsko, surrounded by vineyards and meadows; Banovci, famous for its thermal waters, where a short rest or refreshment stop is possible near the spa complex. Continuing north, the route leads through: Veržej, with the DUO Craft Centre showcasing traditional Slovenian craftsmanship; the natural oasis of Lisjakova struga Forest Park; Radenci, well known for its mineral water springs. In Gornja Radgona, you have the option to taste local sparkling wines before crossing the border into Austria at Bad Radkersburg, a beautifully preserved historic town. The final kilometers follow the Mura through quiet Austrian villages and floodplain landscapes, ending in Mureck, where you cross the iconic cycling bridge over the river.
