Hungary is a party to the Schengen Agreement, which allows for free movement between certain European countries. Citizens of the European Union do not need a visa or residence permit to enter Hungary. Entry is permitted based on a valid identity card or a valid passport for 90 days after entry, he or she may reside in Hungary without residence registration. Hungary is in the Schengen Area, which means that, in general, there are no checks at the border crossings with Austria, Slovenia, Slovakia. To enter Hungary from Croatia, Romania and Serbia it is sufficient to have a passport or an identity document, if the visit does not last more than 90 days.
Money
In Hungary, the official currency is the Hungarian Forint (HUF). ATMs are available mainly in bigger settlements or towns, in some villages ATMs can not be found. Most of the ATMs are not able to provide EUR for the users, only Hungarian Forint is available.
Credit cards are widely accepted in Hungary, but in rural areas to have smaller amounts of cash (10.000 or 20.000 HUF) is strongly recommended.
EUR in cash is only accepted in bigger hotels or supermarkets.
